As February rolled around I began to get cocky and thought I had escaped the extreme Scandinavian winter.
False.
Mother Nature must have heard my boasting because since the start of February, she has smacked Copenhagen with below-freezing temperatures, extreme winds and snow.
Since arriving in Denmark, whenever I myself to a Dane (jeg hedder kirsten, jeg kommer fra California) and tell them I am from California I always get the same response– a chuckle and a “good luck this winter.”
Compared to past years, this winter has been exceptionally mild (until February that is). Before February, we experienced mild temperatures, little rain and no snow (see why I was getting cocky?).
Thanks to my amazing super-jacket, multiple scarves and an extensive collection of earwarmers, this California girl has been keeping warm. Oddly enough, I am enjoying this weather. We will see how long the honeymoon lasts but for now I am enjoying bundling up and watching the city disappear under a coat of white snow.
Take that Mother Nature.
kiri. you will have to keep me warm when i visit. (in less than 3 weeks, i might add!)
My teeth are chattering just from LOOKING at these pix (and it might not help that I just came inside from a brisk walk around my 29-degree neighborhood…but I have nothing to complain about!).
Beautiful pictures…
🙂
You should definitely buy some ice skates Kirsten. I grew up skating every day after school back in Wisconsin. We have a small pond behind our house and I am waiting for it to freeze over here in Colorado.
Fabulous photos! Enjoy your stay~
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
Well, it looks terribly chilly there, but it still looks beautiful! Lovely photos! 🙂
That yellow building looks so summery and yet, it’s snowing. At least it’s pretty there! : ) Make a snow angel.
my husband was invited to give a talk in Copenhagen in September. I’m hoping to tag along with him. I’ve never been to Europe before and I will check back to your blog for advice on where to go and what to see, and most importantly, what to eat! Congratulations on becoming Freshly Pressed.
That looks like some serious wind blown cold to me. What sorts of ear muffs and do they work? 😉
The photos look pretty from here.
Yes, it does look abit atypical for Copenhagen. To me, Copenhagen’s climate is something like Vancouver, BC in the winter –mild and not a ton of snow. (Vancouver gets snow in the surrounding mountains, not much on foothills/delta area.)
We enjoyed Copenhagen 2 yrs. ago and biked around. http://thirdwavecyclingblog.wordpress.com/2010/09/29/losing-my-cycling-identity-in-the-world%E2%80%99s-cycling-nirvana-copenhagen/
Presumably cyclists were still battling the snow now?
I’ve been an exchange student in the south of Sweden 2010/11 and we had snow there from the middle of November until I left in January. With temperatures well below 0°C during the days! I came around to loving it, and missing it now that I am not there anymore. When the thermostat reached the -7°C last week where I live, I felt oddly at home. Enjoy the cold temperatures and see how the humidity freezes. It looks as if it snows when the sky is clear blue.
It is really nice to see Copenhagen with snow and ice. I have been there this summer and it is fantastic to see familiar sights in the winter.
It was here the same, an easy winter till the end of january. It became really cold for some time, but that is over and done already.
Looks like a wonderful place. I love the architecture of the buildings in your photographs. And I’d add hot chocolate to your other methods of keeping warm. 😉
I’m from (Southern) CAlifornia as well and enjoy watching a blanket of snow and dressing up so cozy…. Luckily, just like Copenhagen, winter doesn’t last here forever… Because I can only enjoy this winter bliss to a point 😉
beautiful pictures!
have a great time!
Looks like my kind of place…but I’m a Minnesota boy. I really like the pictures and look forward to reading more posts!
These are such wonderful photos! I wouldn’t be opposed if you sent some winter you weren’t wanting over to Minnesota.
I loved Copenhagen when I was there a long time ago. Your pictures bring it all back and they are terrific. Kudos to you for sticking out the cold winter California Girl.
Sure it is cold there, but Copenhagen and Scandinavia in general is a place I would like to visit someday … but in the summer.
I feel for you girl. Try to stay warm. Peace.
As a Dane living away from home I am jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beautiful pics of MY city….. Enjoy!
Those gorgeous wall colors make it seem a little less wintry, for sure.
But if you invest in some skates, you’ll definitely gain a different (and pleasurable) perspective on ice and winter.
Beautiful pictures Kirsten! I’ve got a son abroad in Ukraine right now (was here in California) and those winters are just unbearable for him. Lots of news has recently hit the internet about the freezing weather over there in Europe even killing 100’s! It’s crazy how the landscape can look so beautiful yet the weather is so treacherous! Good luck and stay warm through this winter!

Thanks for sharing these lovely pictures. I’ve only visited Denmark in the summer, when Copenhagen was baking in the heat. I prefer the cold, though, and it’s fascinating to see familiar sights in snow and ice. The frozen lakes are amazing! Hope you are keeping warm and enjoying yourself – and congratulations on being Freshly Pressed. 🙂
Excellent post. Take a look at the one entitled four feet of snow in Bologna. You both have something in common. Keep up the good work. Again, great post.
Bob
At least it’s pretty.
Your photos absolutely amaze me! I am glad I stumbled across this post!
Beautiful pictures! Follow me! (: I really like your blog!
The key is wearing the right clothes and staying positive about the things there are to do in the freezing dead of winter. If Colorado is any measure, you’ve got a few months of winter yet to brave.
It does look very cold. I’m so glad Spring will be here soon. Thanks for sharing. Connie

I love the warm tones of the architecture mixed with the frigid atmosphere. Nice contrast. 🙂
I’m from the south of Sweden, just across the waters from Copenhagen. I live in the UK and seeing those pictures makes me homesick to say the least! Lovely!
Its so beautiful there, almost worth braving the cold!
lovely photographs..
I’m English. I used to live in Reykjavik, Iceland. I now live in Southern California. And i have found it colder here in the last few weeks evenings than it is in London OR Reykjavik! I think it’s something to do with the lack of good heating inside apartments, or something! But i walk around my house with more layers than i’ve ever worn.
It looks very cold, but i think skating on the frozen river is very cool
Mother Nature makes for lovely photos!
It’s stunningly beautiful and sunshiny here in California. However, sometimes I think it would be nice to be in the snow!
Yes to the skating! I grew up in Michigan and skated outdoors all winter, sometimes daily. Nothing like that wind shearing the tears right off your face! But it was intoxicating. Thanks for the lovely word and visual pictures of your experiences.
Hey, maybe i will write about ice skating for this week’s blog….I’m inspired!
Wonderful city! I hope you get to enjoy a lot of it — and that you’ve got a pair of skates!
Nice pictures…….beautiful.
Thank you
Your pictures made me feel nostalgic! When I was in high school, we had a foreign exchange student come live with us for a year. He was from Copenhagen. When he went home, I went with him and spent the summer there. That was sixteen years ago, and he and I are still in touch and consider each other family. Copenhagen is such a beautiful city! It just so happens that I also love architecture, so it looks like you have a new regular reader 🙂 So glad I stumbled upon this.
I really can’t stay – Baby it’s cold outside
I’ve got to go away – Baby it’s cold outside
This evening has been – Been hoping that you’d drop in
So very nice – I’ll hold your hands, they’re just like ice
My mother will start to worry – Beautiful, what’s your hurry
My father will be pacing the floor – Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I’d better scurry – Beautiful, please don’t hurry
Well maybe just a half a drink more – Put some music on while I pour
ups, just a quote from a song.
Frigid looking, yet quite beautiful. I love winter, though. Love your blog 🙂
Bharat City – very nice pics in this blog.
those picks are very good and snow is awesome next month i am planning go for trip…………i love skating snow………thanks for posting beautiful photos………
loved these snowy pics…it’s like I am dreaming…i always love these places….
That’s nothing. When temperatures reach just below freezing here in Finland it’s balmy 😛
Just the other day I walked to work and thought it felt unusually warm. I checked the temperature when I got in and it showed -14 C (6,8 Fahrenheit).
When it gets cold around here we have around -30 degrees Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit). When it snows there are trucks working around the clock to clear the streets.
Don’t worry, if you’re really unlucky you might get snow and sub-zero temperatures as long as until late May. Which, in all fairness, is getting more and more likely: when I was ten or so we’d get snow around the middle of December (first snowfall would be late November if we were lucky, but it never stuck around), but now it seems to have moved to after Christmas.
The trick is wool. Get a big wooly jumper, a woolen hat and some gloves and you’ll stay toasty and fashionably Scandinavic (if that is even a word… Scandinavian, maybe? Not as fashion-sounding as Scandinavic, tho…)
Hope you enjoy Køben, tho, great city and some really good beers there.
Amazing snaps.. Beautiful to see it. Great photography work…..
Copenhagen in winter really is beautiful! But be assured that its summers are even nicer – that is if it doesn’t rain all summer long like last year. So: god lykke med sommeren i dejligt København ;-). Nice blog by the way!
Beautiful pictures
My favourite city, the snow and the architecture of the buildings is something else. Sort of reminds me of amsterdam.
This brought back so many lovely memories for me – thank you! 🙂
Great photos!
cool pictures….i loved it.
Here in southern Sweden folk always begin complaining about the snow, but it’s sort of ambivalent. They begin complaining about driving the car etc, but under the surface you could sense a secret joy for the nice cold, and the snow for skiing and the ice for skating. If the Swedes were honest, they would say they rather enjoy cold temperatures. I don’t know if this is the case for all Scandinavians?
Great pictures, I am glad that I check freshly pressed. So many little gems to be found – I will be following your blog!

Interesting!
I want to visit Copenhagen so badly…
nice photographs. i like the frozen lake picture, it is too good and perfect view.

This is my first year in a new snowy city too. I’m orginially from Houston, TX, the land of warmth and cowboys lol. I moved to Cleveland for grad school however. Everyone told me how awful their winters were and how much I was going to hate it. We didn’t get any serious snow until right before Christmas. January was so mild though that I’m beginning to wonder if Mother Nature forgot about us. Have fun in Copenhagen!
Lovely Photos!
You’re lucky it’s been mild there! But then again, if I visited Denmark/Scandinavia I would actually prefer it to snow during my time there, since that’s all I think about when I imagine that area of Europe 😛
Beautiful pictures! My sister spent a semester abroad in Copenhagen a year ago and she loved it. I’ve been wanting to go ever since I saw her pictures. I’m currently living in Madrid, Spain and it’s been pretty cold this past month. I can’t imagine dealing with a Scandinavian winter. Thanks for sharing!
Those poor sledders really need some more snow.
Oh! I have to visit Köpenhamn soon. I love the city and the danes. As you say we’ve had a very mild winter compared to last year for example. I hope the snow melts soon. Last year it stayed until the beginning of April in Uppsala, Sweden, where I study. I come from Varberg, south of Gothenburg and it’s much milder there.

I love Copenhagen! Originally from Oslo, Norway, so it used to be my ‘neighbor’ city 😉
I have been wanting to do some skating this year but its been too warm.
You took some great pictures!
Dan
I’ve always wanted to visit Denmark. May wait til summer though. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
Geez. That does look cold. I hope it’s worth it! I love the title of this blog btw.
Pretty reminder me of Torino Italy
We (also from CA – though not originally) had the same thoughts here in Berlin!
Haha. I know your pain. I’m a Californian and I lived in the interior of Alaska for three years. Got to love that insanely cold weather!
hey buddy, great pics, I would like to follow your blog.
It’s cool how snow always looks so good when you’re inside looking out!
We went up to Troodos Square in Cyprus the other week (8th February) and we too are having some very odd weather this winter.
We do get snow on Troodos (Mount Olympus) every winter but not with the minus temperatures we’re having this year!
The photos are fabulous Kirsten and it’s amazed me how many photos I’ve seen this year where it looks like even hell could freeze over. I have a friend who hails from Hamburg and I sent her a photo the other week on facebook to show where all the ships were encased in ice in port….
Weird weather – I hope the summer comes soon!
just be lucky you don’t live in Norway, we hit -20 degrees yesterday and even the cars wouldn’t play that game. Forced myself to work and the office had only 15 degrees inside. I’d gladly swap my winter for your Danish winter!
oh…i love how snowy it is!!! 🙂
Cold-enhagen– lol I LIKE THAT!
The yellow and orange building is great.

Was in Copenhagen … 2 weeks ago – when you got all the snow … and I was freezing while walking around in Nyhavn – lived in Copenhagen in 1968 and it’s a cold city in the winter. Funny thing is that it’s ice cold one side of the streets and not on the other. We didn’t have any snow over in Landskrona, only 60 min away. Glad I had my warm boots on.
Great city .. great photo’s – great post.
Yes, I (also a Californian living in Copenhagen) have had the exact same experience. There must be a Murphy’s law related to Danish weather – the minute you feel lucky/grateful/etc. that you’ve escaped a harsh winter, one will suddenly appear. At least it seems to have melted…for the time being….
Thank you – I have been missing winter on the East Coast of the USA. Enjoyed seeing some snow pictures!
I love the picture of the yellow and orange building. Very cool!
Digging the pictures 🙂
Keep it up! Ill be checking up on your blog. Cheers from San Diego!

Check out mine whenever your bored.
beautiful pics….
Take that Mother Nature! Love the pics- and the great attitude about the experience of a real winter. I bet it is freeeeeeezing!
a lot colder then australia!
Great pictures,
looking forward to move back to DK from the US.
Nice
My name is Kirsten and I studied abroad in Denmark with DIS too!
I was at DIS in Spring 2009 in the European History, Prague program. Blogging while abroad was a great experience and is so great to look back on old posts. Good luck with architecture and just wait for Spring to arrive. It is wonderful!

I LOVE Cophenhagen and have fond memories of swimming in the baltic at the ‘Harbour Bath’ in the summer before my dear friends wedding.
Enjoyed your wintry collection! . . . Congrats on being “Freshly Pressed”!

Citrus drink on a grey day. Great blog post!
Nice photos! I live in Copenhagen too, but too bad I didn’t get to check out the frozen lakes before they thawed. I noticed that you’re an architecture student—what a coincidence because my husband is working here as an architect. Copenhagen really is a great place for architecture lovers. Good luck with your studies!
Geez…I’ve really gotta stop complaining about 45 degree weather here in Connecticut.
My friend and I wanted to visit Denmark this past summer, but sadly it was too far north from our route. Your photos make me wish we factored it in. Thanks!
Cheers from an American in Stockholm! 🙂
beautiful
I got a chill from my vantage point. I doubt I’d want to visit Denmark during winter.
Wonderful information and thanks for sharing.
Fantastic images…I too am in CA & am impressed you are making it through! Three cheers for excellent jackets.
Stunning photos! I find it interesting that they still put the umbrellas, tables and chairs outside the cafes in weather like this!
these pictures are beautiful!! must visit copenhagen after seeing these pictures 🙂
I’d like to visit Copenhagen someday.
My favorite city 🙂 I spent Christmas 2010 there with my boyfriends family. Can’t wait to go back and I hope it snows when I do. Great pics!
Looks like a nice town – I know Oslo and Reykjavik but have never been to Denmark.
My only visit to Copenhagen was in the autumn, and it was cold enough then. Beautiful city, with beautiful friendly people. Expensive, however!
I love the photo of the yellow building!
Hi Kirsten! Lovely shots. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
I am such a woos. I won’t ride my bike in our mild australian winter here in sydney. perhaps I should try riding in snow to toughen me up a bit
wow!
